1. Features of Non-Magnetic Flex Collar
Non-Magnetic Flex Collars are engineered from the same high-purity austenitic stainless steel as our standard NMDCs, but feature a highly optimized structural profile. By precision-machining a larger internal diameter (I.D.), we strategically reduce the cross-sectional area and moment of inertia.
This specialized thin-wall design significantly drastically lowers the collar’s bending stiffness. Every unit is manufactured to exact API Spec 7-1 tolerances, with thread roots rigorously cold-rolled to maximize fatigue endurance limit and mitigate connection failure under continuous flexural stress.
2. Enhanced Bending Fatigue Resistance
Navigating aggressive wellbore trajectories exposes standard BHA components to extreme cyclic bending stresses, frequently leading to premature mechanical fatigue and catastrophic twist-offs.
Our flex collars are purpose-built to absorb and distribute these stresses uniformly across the tool body. This flexibility allows the drill string to smoothly pass through severe doglegs and tight curve sections without exceeding the material’s yield strength, preserving the integrity of both the rotary shouldered connections and the internal instruments.
3. Typical Oilfield Applications
Flex collars are mandatory components in short-radius horizontal wells and high-angle directional drilling campaigns. They are typically positioned within the MWD/LWD string to provide a non-magnetic, interference-free housing for sensitive surveying probes.
While standard drill collars provide essential Weight on Bit (WOB), flex collars sacrifice rigidity to deliver unparalleled maneuverability. By safely housing electronics while flexing with the aggressive wellbore curvature, they enable operators to execute complex trajectories that would be mechanically impossible with conventional BHA configurations.
